HRH The Duke of York, KG becomes Patron of Malaria No More UK

LONDON, 12 APRIL 2018 – Today Malaria No More UK (MNMUK), an organisation determined to end history’s deadliest killer disease, announced The Duke of York as Patron of the charity. HRH has been a long-standing supporter of the organisation and the global fight against malaria. He joins other high-profile supporters including David Beckham and Andy Murray, who are currently on the charity’s Leadership Council.

The Duke of York lends his support to MNMUK at a pivotal point in the journey towards a malaria free world. Malaria deaths have fallen by 60% since 2000, saving over 7 million lives. However, progress towards ending malaria has now stalled, with a child still dying every two minutes from this preventable disease that costs less than £1 to treat. Reasons for the stalling include a plateau in global funding, growing resistance to prevention and treatment methods, climate change and acute malaria outbreaks found in areas of crisis, war and conflict.

The announcement of HRH’s patronage comes a week ahead of the Malaria Summit London 2018 - co-hosted by the Governments of Swaziland, Rwanda and the UK, and convened by the RBM Partnership to End Malaria and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting taking place in London. The Commonwealth is disproportionately affected by malaria with 90% of citizens living in malaria affected countries. The Malaria Summit will call on Commonwealth leaders to take bold political action, and bring business leaders, philanthropists, scientists, Heads of States and civil society together to announce a number of new commitments that will help accelerate progress towards beating malaria once and for all

A public facing campaign - Malaria Must Die, So Millions Can Live - being convened by MNMUK on behalf of the global malaria community, aims to ensure there is a strong pubic mandate for game-changing commitments from the Commonwealth.

James Whiting, MNMUK’s Executive Director welcomes The Duke of York: “We are thrilled that The Duke of York has agreed to become a Patron of Malaria No More UK. He is a long-standing champion of the campaign to end malaria, and his support is even more important at this critical time when the unprecedented progress of recent years is at risk. We look forward to working with The Duke of York to inspire governments, businesses and the public to be the generation that ends malaria for good.”

Over the years The Duke of York has shown his commitment to the fight against malaria, supporting innovation and research to fight the disease. Due to the nature of malaria, this fight can only go two ways: forwards or backwards. There is no standing still and we share a determination with The Duke of York to end malaria for good
